Learning Support/Resource

In St. Vincent's Convent N.S. we cater for children of all abilities, including children with Special Educational Needs who can be accomodated within mainstream schooling. We have a dedicated team of Learning Support/Resource Teachers (LSRT) in the school. The role of the LSRT team is to provide supplementary teaching for children with varying intellectual, physical and visual abilities and to collaborate and consult with class teachers and parents. There is an emphasis on Early Intervention in the school when selecting children for supplementary teaching.

We liaise with various outside agencies such as Enable Ireland, the Regional Autistic Unit and the Educational Service for the Visually Impaired.

The Learning Support/Resource team incorporate a combination of individual tuition, small group instruction, team teaching, and in class supports. The programmes that are implemented include:

Reading Recovery:

Two LSRT teachers have been trained in the delivery of the Reading Recovery programme and receive ongoing professional development support in the programme. At present eight children are receiving one to one intervention on the Reading Recovery Programme.

Maths Recovery:

Two LSRT teachers have been trained in the delivery of the Maths Recovery programme and receive ongoing professional development support in the programme. At present four children are receiving one to one intervention on the Maths Recovery Programme.

Literacy Lift Off:

Literacy Lift Off has been introduced at Senior Infant and First Class levels in St. Vincent's and has been in operation for a number of years. The PM levelled reader scheme is used throughout the junior classes, and in conjunction with the Literacy Lift Off programme. Six copies of each text are used in each session. All books are levelled and boxed. In early September the children are given a reading level and grouped accordingly. There are 4 groups per class with no more than 6 children in each group.

The children rotate around 4 literacy stations spending 10-15 minutes at each. These groups are regularly reviewed and change according to need. The stations are as follows and are led by the LSRT teachers and the class teacher.

GUIDED READING
Here, children with the same reading needs, read a new book daily, with the teacher. This book is at their instructional level i.e. it is challenging but not too difficult. They learn to use visual, meaning and structural cues. This book is brought home that night.

FAMILIAR READING/SPELLING
Here the children read books to the teacher on or below their level of reading. They read silently, in pairs, as a group or take turns to read aloud. The children also practice their spellings using magnetic letters.

PHONICS
Here the children look at sounds. They learn to recognise and put together the different sounds in the English language. We use magnetic letters, whiteboards and games.

WRITING
Here the children write everyday. They put into use what they have picked up at the phonics and reading stations to communicate a message to a target audience.
